Milan - Journey II / part III

The next day - Sunday 29th January - 2006;

I had a good night rest, a bit short but better than nothing. Out to the train station. Gare du North stays impressive what a building.

Also the service of getting tickets and info is a lot better structured than in Milano. The ticket is (in comperence) a lot more expansive, it's more expansive for half the number of kilometres ... Strange. Only 2 more trains to Amsterdam available today. So it will be around 16 that. I'll leave. That gives me a few hours. Leaving luggage is also another business. Through the metal detector. Start the laptop, log in, oke no explosion than it's allowed to leave it. Not a bad way to do it. Perfect service and gives a save feeling. Breakfast in France is only good for me with a real nice Croissant buerre (naturellement). A nice orange juice with it and my breakfast is complete.

Took the Metro (what an superb invention) to the Champs Elysee to look at the Culture Biere, a new store from Heineken - see log Culture Biere. Bought some specials for Mum, yes Mum I've got it. Of course went to my favourite store on the Champs Elysee - Aphora. It's a kind of Mega Mega Superb Douglas / ICI Paris store. So many fragrances you don't have in Holland. And I bought that sent that you can't find outside these doors ... I'm offended though. Unpacking my things I discovered a creme for wrinkles with man ... What's that for ... I'm not that old. Pitty, no bonuspoints this time, I'll be back though. Quick back to Gare du North and buy a sandwich (avec Boulangerie Paul) and some drinks to start the journey back. And what a weather, full blue skies, a bit chilly but in the sun it's wonderfull. Till my TGV journey begins, bon appetit! My french colleque made it although heavy snow in the South of France.

TGV
The numbers on the ticket correspond with the train itself. That was not the case in Milano. There are also no people who argue about there place. Much better, resulting in a departure on time 15.55 on the minute. Very impressive. As well with every door an attendant who will check if you're in the right train, nice. I feel better already. Amsterdam we're coming. The train is completely full. Also you can understand and hear in all kind of languages the intercom. The fun part is that the Thalys rides along the highway I always drive going to France, the train is a little quicker though. Lille is there within 50 minutes! Bruxelles Midi (zuid) - 17.20, very quick. Antwerpen - Berchem - 18.00 Roosendaal - 18.35 Rotterdam - 19.10 Den Haag - 19.25 Schiphol - 19.50 Home,

Home, Sweet home ... my own bed, I love it.

Milan - Journey II / part II

Thursday - January 26th - 2006.

Finally it will happen, dining in Ristorante Bagutta. Last time I was in Milano it was closed. This restaurant has been recommended by a friend (italian) so it should be good. Arriving in Milan (thursday morning) and it starts to snow a bit ... During lunch there's already enough snow for traffic to be in problems. Than at diner time we missed the restaurant due to ... Snow. The bus takes 2 hours for 500 meters. The evening program has been cancelled. We ate in the hotel. Not bad actualy

Costoletta di Vitelo Milanese / nice big and very tastefull, so sitting in the restaurant with a greek, frenchman, spanjard, italian and dutch guy. So nice to hear all the dialects of the different countries. Of course accompanied by a nice italian red wine (Cabernet Franc - 2002). But ... I missed Bagutta.

Next day - Friday January 27th - 2006 - off to the airport, after saying goodbye to all my collegues. Everybody is waiting for taxi's, busses and nothing moves. The people who are waiting from 07 AM are still there, nice we had a later flight. No snow in Amsterdam. And while everybody is waiting for the bus / taxi / transport our bus (56 passangers big) arrives everybody jalous en we enter the bus - 2 persons
- with the bus and metro - a stop at the coffeeshop for an espresso and a croissant : € 1,60, nice prices and a real espresso as it should be done, mjammie, we made it well on time although the snow, and it was still snowing,. Airport ... Closed !!!

Try to check in and ... It will not happen. "Can you come back tomorrow?" Next steps ... Arranging an hotel and off with the Malpenso Express (train) to Milan. Of course delayed as well, from 2 trains an hour to 1 every 1,5 hours... Found a hotel, very expansive, incredible, the Hotel Amstel is cheaper. But I ran into my french collegue, the greeks are here as well
after going and trying different things we all end up together in the same hotel ... how's that for coincidence?

I don't complain much about service but this hotel I left the ' moment of truth' (questionaire) filled in. The safe was out of order, the TV was snowy - every channel - the sink was broken, the shower was poor and the list continous, I can expext that with an hotel in the lower range but not 5 star plus!!! And I wonder the most if they reply to me ... The Grand Hotel Duomo (
http://www.grandhotelduomo.com) nothing about the location though ...

Arranging the TGV for tomorrow to Paris and than from Paris to Amsterdam. We'll see ... Sema thanks for the booking of the hotel in Paris. And special thanks to my PA (everybody should have one) for weather updates, information, TGV information, hotel info, bookings, sms updates of the airport and not to forget the mental support - kiss for you, thx 'draakje' PA
>.

The next day, Saturday January 28th ...
After shopping for some clean clothes I ended up in the sale, such a pitty I only carry such a small bag this time not even place for a jacket. But from underwear till a nice and WARM sweater I have it all. Also a small lunch with the Greek and the Dutch and of to the TGV. The metro was quick, easy good indicated and I arrived at Milano Centrali. A little bit early but better early than late. The main boards with travel information showed the 16.13 to Paris but not which track. So I just went looking and found the TGV - I wonder if people missed this train - than your seat number ...found it, was taken though, next wagon, also taken, I just went through the train till I had an empty 87, because wagon 6 is nowhere indicated. Travelling is fun. While waiting for this train I had the opportunity to look at all the people and I think that at least 60% is running. So funny to look at people trying to find their way. I know we Dutch want to regulate everything and that's far from good but sometimes just some small notes where trains are leaving from could be helpfull. Probably the - sorry - italian way. The TGV is on it's way. T(rain) G(rande) V(itesse) ?

Journey 1 Milano is a big city, the TGV took a long time to leave Milano. And although the snow is melting hard a little outside Milano their's plenty snow, the TGV is also not using it's highest 'gears'. 6 hours to go ... I'm happy that I'm not the only fool.

Torino (next stop) and people are confused if they are on the right seat. So 50% changes seats again ... Torino 17.50 - 5 hours to go. Oulx (18.30) I thought I was in a fast train ... never heard of the place. And the snow is back, roads are white, trucks are cleaning the road. I hope we will be able to reach Paris, it seems the south part of France is also experiencing some snowy wheater. Almost time for the bar I think. The journey continous. Bardonnechia ... where time stood still, very small place, very much snow and looks like a small pitoresq village. It's now 18.50 up to the next stop. Modane, la douche France (19.20) well at least we made it to France. I Wonder how fast we'll go from now on, I feel the need for speed. When all people found there spaces I'll head for the bar. Again people wonder where to sit. The lady just coming in may sit opposite of me
. Oh they are twins, finally some nice company Chambery - Challes les eaux. My russian is not so good, luckily they speak english too we arrived in this place (snow free) at 20.45. Time is flying. So far so good and no snow missery, we should make 23.00 at Paris. A lot of people are getting of, up to the last part of journey 1 of the TGV. Bourgoin Jallieu, at 21.50 the before last stop, there will be an extra stop before Paris. The ladies are ready for a birthday - surprise - party in Paris. Always handy a TGV with all facilities on board. People are getting tired and more quiet, even the italians Lyon par dieu. Is this the town Lyon ... Yes it is, so that means that we need at least 1.50 hours to get to Paris ... Wasn't it for the stop of 50 minutes because of electricity problems. 22.25 we entered this station and we left at 23.15. A tiring last sprint to Paris. 01.20 we arrived. Metro closed ... Let's take a cab, there were some more to think that and only 3 cabs to see. But there were free courtesy busses due to the late arrival. That's nice, I needed to go to Gare du Nord and that was not that far away I thought. Well think again Paul.

We left at 1.45 and I saw everything of Paris. Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, Montparnasse, La Tour Eiffel, The New Moulin Rouge, La Seine - cinq fois, je le veux tous! What means hotel, 03.10 and let's say it this way it has a bed and a shower but that's all there is to say about. I wanted to save some cost but not this much
. Good night for today hope it will be quicker tomorrow. to be continued ...

Trattoria Bagutta - Milaan / Italy

Trattoria Bagutta Via Bagutta 14 / 20121 Milano Tel : +39 (0) 2 76000902

It looks like a small place from the outside and it's a bit hard to find if you're a tourist. Especially the way it looks from the outside, it's not a place you would take as a first choice. So going to Milano remember this address. Really near the centre of the city. Inside it's pretty big, at least 12 waiters and 7 cooks ... This must be a good place. And very clever, bringing you to your seat they walk you along the antipasti buffet.

I missed Vitello Tonato and choose the Mozzarella di bufale. I know a lot of other choises but where can you eat real fresh Mozzarella? Indeed, in Italia you can, it was devine, great taste, beautiful olive oil, taste full tomatoes, perfect.

For the main course I took the fritto di scampi e calamari what a treat. There is such a difference in Calamari from the Netherlands and fresh from Italia!!! Almost to die for. They even print an * if a course is made from a frozen product. These were not ...

Accompanied by a Pinot Grigio. The restaurant is very old, the waiters too but they understand the business very well. Great, friendly people. A lot of pictures on the wall almost every centimeter is full but it suits this old place. I saw the meat coming through, that I'll take the next time another great restaurant added to the list. And the prices are good. They will not be the cheapest but certainly not the highest. Price and quality are very much in line. The menu is daily made up and printed so of the 60 (or so) choices they were only 2 prepared from frozen goods the rest is all fresh.

In other words we didn't make it on Thursday night so after being stranded on Friday we went as well to the restaurant ...

De Pastory - Cadier en Keer

Restaurant de Pastory & Salles des FĂȘtes Famille Vermeulen
Goessens Dorpsstraat 45 - 6267 AA Cadier en Keer
tel + 31 (0) 43 4071823 / depastory@hetnet.nl
website : http://www.depastory.nl

This restaurant is situated in a very old house where the wooden beams are "sealed" in the walls. And the restaurant is dived into two "rooms" with the bar in the middle. When you arrive at this restaurant you feel hungry already, very nice and romantic atmosphere. In the shadow of this restaurant they have a "salles des fĂȘtes" where they can give nice private diners in the same style and atmosphere of the restaurant. It's situated in Cadier en Keer a small village 5 minutes from Maastricht. The ktichen is french orientated.

The dinerclub decided to go to this restaurant and Joost (momentarely short in Holland) recommended this restaurant. So Joost (organiser), Ninke (not having a balance day) with Bas (finaly a real engine in his Beamer), Annemieke (the photographer), Yosha (Diva and "schrokop" which has a complete new meaning after this weekend ... ) and myself (...) went to Maastricht and had a great time with great food and terrific wines, the menu for this evening :

Amuse;
Marinated raw salmon, puff pastry with dutch shrimps, blinis with goat cream cheese

Starter;
A tune "pie" in oil with Ris de Veau (Kalfs zwezerik - Sweetbread) and ravigotte sauce

In between;
Ravioli of gooseliver and spinach and a sauce of mozzarella and black pepper

Main Course;
Monkfish (zeeduivel - lot) from the oven in a carrot coulis with champagne

Dessert;
Crepe with warm cherries and vanilla ice-cream Accompanied by a wine for every course and ended with Coffee et friandises ...

A great diner with only one remark that we liked a little bit more foie in the ravioli for the rest it was a super diner in a great atmosphere restaurant of course with beautiful people as well. Let's plan the next diner ...

Restaurant Halvemaan

Van Leyenberglaan 320
1082 DD Amsterdam
tel + 31 (0) 20 6440348
website : http://www.halvemaan.nl

Today again a very luxury setting for diner ... and the fun part is, I never heard of it before, heard about the chef though, and my lovely TomTom couldn't find it because the city of lovely Amsterdam changed the numbers of the street ... It's a perfect place (since you can park your car pretty easy) lovely scenery in this part of Amsterdam as well. It's a kind of bungalow, two stories high, dining at the second floor. The atmosphere is a bit old. But most important what about the food ...

Amuse Blood sausage (Black Pudding) "Zure zult" Chicken in crust with a dragon sauce

Starter nougat of duck liver, almonds, pistachios, rice-paper and pumpkin oil

Main course sweetbread / en francais - ris de veau / nl - kalfszwezerik crispy sautéed sweet bread, green cabbage with macadamia nuts and jus of duck liver, sherry vinegar and pedro ximenez

Dessert
chocolate croquette with pear compote, clove ice-cream and Banyuls syrop

The Amuse was pretty good, the starter was fairly small for the price we needed to pay - that was in fact for all courses, prices were not according to the servings - no nouvelle cuisine for me. The entire diner was pretty small so you're still a bit hungry afterwards. The Sweetbread was perfect, didn't like the garnish a lot and didn't taste all the garnish mentioned. The dessert was the weak piece the chocolate was not great and the garnish again not on a very high level. I expected more from this restaurant. Prices are very high for this meal, a bit too high to my taste. Well the next item on the agenda is winetasting lessons tomorrow, thursday a quite evening and friday a special winetasting ... so to be continued,

The College Hotel - Amsterdam

This log is especially for Marco. Marco it was a pleasure to work with you the last few years. With company 1 I left for another challenge and with company 2 you leave for another position. In honour of that we had a lovely diner after a small tour through the hotel at The College Hotel in Amsterdam. Thanks for a lovely and great diner (I hope you enjoyed the choises of wine ) and we'll definitely will meet in the near future. The small gift from our side was a small token of our appreciation of the last years and we hope you'll remember us when playing your favorite sport.

The College Hotel in Amsterdam. Set in a spectacular 19th century school building, this hotel is actually run by students under the supervision of professionals. The hotel has only 40 rooms and suites, each distinctively designed with its own individual identity and luxurious modern facilities. The restaurant pays tribute to the Golden Age of dutch cuisine by honouring classics from the past from a contemporaty perspective. They say about themselves : Affordable chic with a Dutch twist.

Well the building (a former school building) is spectacular. Such a beauty, so nicely restored. An enourmous luxury that appeals almost evrybody. Ladies in evening gowns, the Golden Age also reflects in it's customers. Very high level of detail in which student can (and some need ) learn the business of Horeca in a perfect place. If you want to impress gentlemen, this is the place you bring your date .... Marco thanks again. (I know you "hate" these words ...)

We started with champagne. Deutz ... and quite frankly a lovely champagne, like champagne ought to taste. No hard bubbles, but actually a lovely wine of great taste. Good opening.

The Amuse Infusion of green apple with "korenwijn" "Ossenworst" with musterd jelly Icecream made of mussels from zeeland "Kroket" with Stolwijkse Cheese

Starter
Farmers Terrine of Venison with mushroom salade

Main Course Sausage of pike perch (snoekbaars) with sauerkraut with lobster sauce

Side dish "Kweepeer" with compote of goatcheese

Dessert
"Stroopwafel souffle" with pear sorbet

Espresso et friandises

Great diner, perfect company ... till we meet again! Even the website is amazing, click on the link at the top!

The trainee can cook ...

Chez Danique - somewhere near Amsterdam

You might think that I'm not eating anymore ... but after some nice winetasting lessons yesterday (and the next three weeks to come) today (actually yesterday) our trainee cooked us a meal. And I think we can say that she will get at least a 6.9 (B-) for her traineeship Especially when she kicked her parents out to have the house for ourselves ... She and her boyfriend cooked for us 6 courses:

Gratinated Oysters
Shrimp Cocktail
Sauted Coquilles on glasswort (zeekraal)
Sauted Dear steak with cranberry sauce and pommes duchess
Sauted Poire and Stilton
Citrus ice cream

Accompanied with wines, we're impressed. We're so lucky that's she stays for another 5 months! Danique thanks for the nice evening and the present. Let me know when we need to set the coffee machine to the perfect cup of coffee.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend
The eyes see what the mind fears
The eye confirms what the heart sees
The best consience is a bad memory
There are no indiscrete questions, only indiscrete answers ...
Tijdreizen hebben geen toekomst
Te veel clowns, te weinig circussen
Too many people today know the price of everything and the value of nothing
Tobben versterkt fluisteren tot een schreeuw
To know me is to love me
Talent brengt je aan de top, karakter bepaalt of je je daar kunt handhaven
Talent helpt, maar niet zoveel als ambitie
The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return
They who gave up, never know how close they were from reaching their goal
Tussen vrijgezel zijn en de ware liefde zit een berg plezier
The difference between involvement and commitment is like ham and eggs, the chicken is involved, the pig is committed.
The most dangerous food is wedding cake
There is no sincerer love, than the love of food

Without music life would be a mistake
Why do today what you can do tomorrow
Why can't I remember a day that I can't forget
We learn a few of succes, but a lot of our failures
We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are
Work is the most beautiful thing there is, so make sure you leave some for the next day
We lopen voor en staan erachter
What you are is what you have been and what you will be is what you do now

When we're happy we're always good, but when we're good we're not always happy
Why protect yourself with a gun, when you can protect everyone by destroying it - Loesje
Why share the pie when you own the bakery
Woorden die spreken ogen die het zeggen

Waste not fresh tears over old griefs

Werken is het mooiste dat er is laten we dus zorgen dat we iets voor de volgende dag overlaten

We leren weinig van succes maar veel van onze mislukkingen
Welcome to the church of the Holy Cabbage, lettuce pray

You can't fight the tears that ain't coming
You never get a second chance for a first impression
You're not going to be happy
unless you're growing and contributing in a meaningful way,
and you cannot grow
unless you step in the unknown
You shouldn't have to sacrifice who you are just because somebody else has a problem with it
Tour eyes are always bigger than your stomach
Yesterday is history, today is a gift, tomorrow is mystery

Zie ik door het bos mijn eigen boom nog wel?
Zij wilde de wereld zien, hij kocht een atlas voor haar
Zwemmen leer je door onderdompeling, niet door een keer per week naar zwemles te gaan
